Terlingua Ghost Town Lodging
Terlingua Escondido

Terlingua Escondido sits just steps from the restaurants, bars, and galleries of the Terlingua Ghost Town, yet the property is tucked out of sight behind the desert landscape, giving guests a genuine sense of seclusion. The hosts are long-time locals and regional guides who bring firsthand knowledge of Big Bend to every stay.

The property offers two luxury glamping yurts and a private loft cabin, each designed around the views and night skies that define this corner of the Chihuahuan Desert. Dome skylights overhead, king beds dressed in plush linens, custom copper fixtures, and private patios facing the Chisos Mountains set the tone across all three units. There are no televisions, and that is very much the point.

Located midway between Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park, Terlingua Escondido works equally well as a base for serious adventurers who want to cover both parks and as a quieter retreat for travelers content to watch the light change over the mountains from a campfire.

At a Glance
Known For

Luxury glamping yurts with dome skylights and direct Chisos Mountain views, walking distance to the Ghost Town. Recognized as an Airbnb Guest Favorite and Super Host, with AirBnB rankings in the top 5% of homes on the platform.

Location

22900 FM 170, Terlingua, Texas 79852 — adjacent to the Terlingua Ghost Town, roughly 13 miles from the west entrance of Big Bend National Park and approximately 25 miles from the eastern boundary of Big Bend Ranch State Park.

Two Yurts and a Loft Cabin

The Cinnabar Yurt takes its name from the mercury ore mined in Terlingua during the town’s industrial heyday. Inside, a king bed sits beneath the dome skylight, a walk-in shower anchors the full bathroom, and custom copper fixtures and a punched-tin Mexican mirror add a regional character the space earns rather than borrows. The kitchenette stocks essentials for light meals, a leather couch and reading light handle the evenings, and a private patio with lawn chairs faces the mountains.

The Sage Yurt is named for the desert flora it disappears into from the outside. The layout mirrors Cinnabar closely — king bed, dome skylight, walk-in shower, kitchenette, leather couch, private patio — with a custom copper-top dining table as its signature interior detail. Both yurts include a white noise machine, high-speed WiFi, and a welcome basket of wine and snacks. Neither has a television.

The Loft occupies half of a duplex cabin and suits travelers arriving as a pair or a small group. Two full beds with bohemian-style bedding, a private bathroom, and a porch with sunrise and sunset views over the Chisos Mountains give it a different character than the yurts without sacrificing the same quality of setting. Room-darkening curtains, a white noise machine, and a full kitchenette round out the unit. Reservations for all three can be made directly through the Terlingua Escondido website or via Airbnb.

Shared Amenities & On-Site Comforts
Communal Fire Pit Area

A large kettle fire pit between the Sage and Cinnabar yurts serves as the social center of the property at dusk. Guests watch the golden light settle over the Chisos Mountains from this spot. A propane fire pit is available when county burn restrictions are in effect; wood fires use this area only and require confirmation with the hosts before lighting.

Outdoor Cooking Station

A propane grill, grilling utensils, and a picnic table give guests a full outdoor cooking setup. The kitchenettes inside each unit stock a microwave, Keurig, blender, and toaster for lighter preparations; no stove or oven is provided indoors. Open fires for cooking are not permitted near the yurts or loft.

Dark Sky Access

The Big Bend region ranks among the darkest night-sky corridors in North America, and the property reflects that priority. Quiet hours run from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m., exterior lighting is kept minimal, and the dome skylight in each yurt frames the Milky Way from the bed itself on clear nights.

Host Expertise

The hosts are long-time local residents and regional guides. They offer personalized recommendations covering river running, mountain biking, hiking routes, day trips into Big Bend National Park, and the Boquillas, Mexico border crossing — and they are generally on-site or nearby throughout a guest’s stay.
