  • Re: Cross Canyon Trail Hike to Mariscal Canyon Float
Yes...I have seen DJ's post.  I am mainly concerned with the hike as my 12 year old son will be with me.  He has done South Rim, Guadalupe Peak, etc. so I am hoping it won't be too much for either of us to hike from Solis to Talley in one day.  The goo...
  • Re: Cross Canyon Trail Hike to Mariscal Canyon Float
I assume you have found this trip report where DJ did essentially the same thing with a the hike over the top after the float trip.

  • Re: Cross Canyon Trail Hike to Mariscal Canyon Float
The float is more like 10 miles, and your driving times will be longer than you may expect. The side roads to Talley and Solis are usually among the park's most challenging. I would park away from the river (and away from the designated campsites as th...
  • Cross Canyon Trail Hike to Mariscal Canyon Float
I am considering putiing together a hike and float trip at Mariscal Canyon over spring break.  My tentative plans are to stash a canoe at Talley, drive back to Solis, hike the Cross Canyon trail to Talley and spend the night, then float through the can...
  • Re: 2nd Time at Big Bend
I would switch the order of Lost Mine and Boquillas Canyon. Lost Mine's scenery is best in the morning.

I agree, then you could hit the hot springs after Boquillas ...
  • Re: High Chisos Plan

Plan A Day 1, take Pinnacles Trail to a site close by Emory Peak, either EP1 or TM1. Setup camp and then hike Emory Peak. Day 2, Take Boot Canyon trail over to Blue Creek t...
  • Re: High Chisos Plan
You probably won't get a Chisos site on Saturday.  But if you were to make a night in the Chisos at the end of your trip after zone camping, I can almost guarantee that you will be able to get a site.  You can only get a site 24 hours in advance, unles...
  • Re: High Chisos Plan
Plan A is certainly possible but, as noted, you may not be able to secure campsites in the Chisos themselves.

I would consider using the Homer Wilson ranch as a starting point and spend a couple of nights along the Dodson, Smoky Creek and Elephant Tusk...
  • Re: High Chisos Plan
The earliest we could possibly get there is Saturday afternoon. Leaving San Antonion late Friday night.
Does the rush start Sat, Sun or Mon?
  • Re: High Chisos Plan
Unless you get there super early you probably won't be able to camp in any of the back country sites in the Basin.  The park is usually 100% full during spring break first come first serve.
