1. Marathon Motel & RV Built in the early 1940s, it sits on 10 acres with unobstructed views of the mountain sunsets and starry skies. Recently renovated, the motel consists of a total of 10 rooms divided into four duplex cabins, RV Park, and campsites. 432-386-4241

2. Oasis Cafe nails down the 3 main West Texas food groups: burgers, mexican food, and chicken fried steak. Open for lunch on the west end of town on U.S. Hwy. 90. 432-386-4521

3. Gage Hotel was built in 1927, and in 1980 was renovated and reopened. The original brick building is a local landmark, now flanked by attractive additions. Furnishings are border style, reflecting Mexican and Anglo ranching heritage. Landscaped courtyard and grounds include a refreshing pool. U.S. Hwy. 90. 800-884-GAGE, local 386-4205

4. Cafe Cenizo and White Buffalo Bar next to the Gage serves creative regional cuisine with influences from Mexico's interior, with a West Texas cowboy flair. Fine dining with a full bar and ample wine selection. Breakfast, Dinner and Sunday Lunch from 11am-2 pm U.S. Hwy. 90. 432-386-4205

5. Turn north on Avenue C to 3rd Street for Eve's Garden Bed and Breakfast An urban hacienda in the high mountain desert. Sculpted of papercrete and strawbale, this hostelry is unique, with art, gardens, old world architecture, a hot tub, an indoor lap pool, a resident jewelry artist, an organic florist, and spectacular sunsets. 6. Evans Gallery. James Evans is a keen observer of the Big Bend, which is reflected in his fine B&W photography. The gallery also displays original works by

7. Front Street Books carries a complete selection of interpretive literature about the Big Bend area, as well as a wide selection of books about Southwestern subjects. Great browsing for avid readers and students of the area. U.S. Hwy. 90. 432-86-4249

8. James Evans Gallery - James Evans is a keen observer of the Big Bend,which is reflected in his fine B&W photography. The gallery also displays original works by other southwestern artists. 432-386-4366

10. Captain Shepard's Inn is a fully restored 100 year old two story adobe home built by the town founder. It has private baths and nice porches. The carriage house is equipped with a kitchenette. North Avenue D, 432-386-4241

11. French Company Grocery and general store.has a little bit of everything. Fresh produce, meats and fish, staple foods, traditional local foods, tobacco, Natural foods, domestic and imported beers/wines, champagne, hot coffee, hardware, first-aid, bicycle repair, picnic supplies, “to-go” sandwiches, hiking gear, health/beauty products. A covered eating area accompanies internet access. 432-386-4522

12. Johnny B's is an authentic 50's style soda joint right out of Happy Days. You'll find fountain drinks, burgers with all the trimmings, delicious deserts in a bright and lively atmosphere. Open Thursday-Sunday 11:30am-3:30pm 432 386-4233

13. Shaman Springs Gallery is where Lloyd & Lauren Goldwire display fine art, bronze sculpture and home décor from Latin American countries. Lloyd creates original bronze sculpture and commission pieces plus various cook-off trophies. #103 US Highway 90. 432-386-4557

14. Adobe Hacienda offers carefully remodeled private homes around town by the day, week or month. Most have two bedrooms, tiled bathrooms, complete kitchen facilities, and even washer/dryer. Quiet and intimate, with nice yards, views. Nice tile work. Inquire at Chisos Gallery. U.S. Hwy. 90. 432-386-4241

    16. Shirley's Burnt Biscuit Bakery is home baked heaven, with donuts, pastries, cookies, cinnamon rolls and more, all fresh baked. U.S. Hwy. 90. Open Monday-Friday, 5:30 am- 1 pm; and sometimes Saturday. . 432-386-4322

    19. Thayer's Trading Post is the ultimate recycling center. They buy, sell, repair, restore, and trade classic automobiles, antiques, and wind powered band instruments. Shuttles for private river trips available. East side of town on U.S. Hwy. 90. 432-386-4342

    24. Stillwell Trailer Park and Hallie Stillwell Museum offers hookups, camping, gasoline and groceries. The Museum documents the life of Hallie Stillwell, a legendary ranching woman who moved to the area early in the century and lived a fascinating and full life near the border for over 80 of her 100 years. Take U.S. Hwy. 385 south from Marathon 38 miles, left on Texas Hwy. 2627 just before entering Big Bend National Park. 432-376-4309

    25. Heath Canyon Ranch. Closed as of fall 2006.

    26. Spring Creek Ranch is the Carter family spread 20 miles south of town. The Carters operated the horse concession in Big Bend National Park for many years, and now offer their private back country and rustic accommodations to visitors looking for a true western experience. It don't get more cowboy than this, U.S. Hwy. 385. 432-376-2260
