Both Study Butte and Historic Terlingua 6 miles west (often called the Ghostown) are former mining towns. Steady growth spurred by retirees and a steadily growing tourism industry have merged the two communities at the junction of Texas State highways 170 and 118, sometimes refered to as Terlingua Junction. Along with the Quicksilver Bank and Terlingua Post Office, several motels, campgrounds, shops, galleries, river outfitters, and restaurants nearby mark the center for tourist services in the Terlingua area and Big Bend National Park.
