In Memory of Jack Lamkin

This week we're taking time to remember a strong supporter of Big Bend - Jack Lamkin. His funeral was held on the 4th of May. According to his online obituary, Mr. Lamkin was born February 12, 1935, in Brownwood, Texas. He graduated from Texas A&M in 1957, and went to work for the Texas Transportation Institute from 1965 to 1990.

When he retired he and his wife, Joan, became Big Bend volunteers. Founding The Friends of Big Bend National Park was among their accomplishments. They contributed a total of over 10,000 volunteer hours in Big Bend activities, only to go back to Brownwood in 2006 and become an active supporter of the Martin and Frances Lehnis Railroad Museum. 6304abea-73f9-45be-82f7-99f8a35e0de7

All in all, Jack T. Lamkin Jr. was an outstanding community member, and he will be sorely missed by friends, family, and of course all those of the Big Bend community.

Inspired by Mr Lamkin's example? The best way to follow in his footsteps and support Big Bend National Park is to choose it as your vacation spot at least once a year. Bring friends and family and have a good time with the natural rugged beauty of Texas.

You can also get involved with associations like The Friends of Big Bend and wildlife conservation organizations. Right now, you can also donate to support the fire relief for the Fort Davis area. In Jack Lamkin's legacy, we can all do our part to help Big Bend and the surrounding community.

Birding in Big Bend

Among the many activities available in Big Bend National Park that highlight the region's diversity of wildlife, birding can be enjoyable and promising. Big Bend engulfs a vast area, bounded by the the rushing Rio Grande valley to the south, containing high peaks in the Chisos Mountains, and boasting both desert and forest climates between the two. It embodies the very diversity that makes America great, providing countless opportunities to spot more than 450 birds in one area.

Trails and Wildlife

There are many things you may love to do in Big Bend National Park in the heat of summer, but running or jogging is probably not one of them. With 90+ degree temperatures, there simply is no such thing as a nice July run in West Texas. With the dry weather we've had this year, you have truly hostile workout conditions. That all changes this time of year, though, as temperatures drop and the sun gives us a break for a few months. What a great time to get out on some trails in Big Bend!
