Summer 2010 Writing Contest Second Prize Winner
The late afternoon sun was setting through the Window as we arrived at our cottage in the Basin. It had been a long drive. Bouncing with pent up energy, and ignoring nature's spectacular light show, my first words were, "I want to climb that!" I was six years old, and I was pointing at the summit of Casa Grande.

It is nearly impossible to pick a “favorite” adventure in Big Bend. To me, Big Bend is synonymous with family. Our first trip was in 1980, I was 9 years old, and my family consisted of mom and dad, older brother, older sister, and younger brother.

The van that stopped for us was heading all the way to the Big Bend. My roommate, Terry, and I had started the cross state hitchhike from Sherman just the day before. Now, late afternoon, we swept along the long road from Marathon quickly to be enveloped by the shadows of Chisos Mountains.

A few years ago in the Texas Lowlands, somewhere around the Brazos Bend area, a buzzard was born. He grew to be a very crafty and handsome buzzard. His coat of feathers had a fine sheen which reflected brightly in the sunlight and he was proud. He was so handsome, in fact, that his friends called him “HB”. “C’mon HB,” they’d say, “Let’s go grab some carrion”.
